Microcatheters and microwires

Monday, June 3

HDT 35.1          14:00-15:30
HDT 36.1          16:00-17:30

Coordinators: Boris Radeleff (Hof/DE), Renato Argirò (Rome/IT)

This Hands-on-Device Training (HDT) will offer the attendees the opportunity to explore, test and learn about the various types of microcatheters and guidewires, including their specific employment, techniques, and pros and cons in clinical settings.

Microcatheters differ widely in size, diameter, and mechanical characteristics. The choice of the correct microcatheter also depends on the type of embolic agent that has to be distributed, the compatibilities of which may differ from the internal lumen available.

Most of the available microcatheters are already coupled with specific guidewires. Guidewire characteristics may vary due to the shape of the tip, the length of the flexible portion, and the mechanical characteristics that can change the support and pushability of the coupled microcatheter. Moreover, different guidewires with specific characteristics cannot be employed in every clinical scenario, due to complex anatomy and the necessity of superselective microcatheterization.

Comprehensive knowledge of material characteristics can result in more confident usage and an increase of procedural success.
