Dual vein embolization
Dual vein embolization (DVE) has emerged as an advancement of portal vein embolization (PVE), in which not only the portal vein, but also the hepatic vein is blocked to increase hypertrophy in the future liver remnant, preparing patients with cancer for surgery. Liver venous deprivation (LVD) is a further option, using not only plugs, but plugs and glue to embolize the relevant vessels. Learn more about PVE, DVE, and LVD with this video.

Joint embolization
Embolization can be used to treat hip, knee, and shoulder pain. In patients with knee osteoarthritis, it can provide a valuable option when conservative treatment has failed and surgery is not desired. Patients with greater trochanteric pain syndrome affecting the hip can also benefit, as can those with adhesive capsulitis in the shoulder (frozen shoulder).

Embolization for HCC treatment
Interventional radiologists play a crucial role in the multidisciplinary team for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC), providing treatments for patients all over the BCLC staging system. Radioembolization and chemoembolization can be used in palliative and sometimes curative settings. In addition, these locoregional treatments have the potential to increase patients’ response to systemic treatments.
