My experience submitting a scientific abstract
Silvia Buso Gil
Presenting author, “Results of rectal embolization over transanal hemorrhoidal dearterialization“
Why did you choose ET to submit your scientific abstract?
ET is the biggest European congress based on embolization with great professionals participating in it. I found it a great opportunity to share our work and exchange our experiences with colleagues and masters in the field.
Tell us a little bit about the research you submitted.
Rectal artery embolization has become a hot topic, as it is providing really good results in patients suffering from bleeding hemorrhoids. However, only a few studies are comparing it with minimally invasive surgeries, and we found out it is more effective, less painful, and allows quicker patient recovery.
Are there any special considerations to take into account when submitting a scientific abstract?
Of course, you must follow the scientific method, with adequate sample size, coherent follow-up, and a rigorous analysis of the results, but your study should also respond to a health and social need, which you can take from your research to daily practice.
Do you have any tips for physicians submitting an abstract for the first time?
The submitting process is very intuitive, just find a way to summarize your research and be clear about your results and how they can benefit patient care.
Will you submit another abstract for ET 2024?
We are collecting data for a new study, if we make it on time for sure we will send an abstract, ET is always a great opportunity to share our results and a platform to facilitate the final publication in CVIR.

Why did you choose ET to submit your scientific abstract?
Due to the topic of our research, I thought it was one of the best places to share our data. I’m happy to say that it was a wonderful experience and gave me the opportunity to discuss our research with the biggest experts in the field.
Tell us a little bit about the research you submitted.
We wanted to do something that could help standardization and hopefully change clinical practice. We aimed to understand how injection techniques/rate modifies the distribution of beads in target vessels/tissue.
We thought that this aspect (impact of injection rate) of a largely performed procedure (Deb-Tace) was poorly understood, and we decided to focus on that. We were able to demonstrate a correlation between the injection rate and the volume of beads delivered and their density in target vasculature. Slower injection rates may help achieve a higher concentration of beads in target blood vessels, delivery of greater volume, and different patterns of distribution when compared to fast injections. This concept may be translated to every embolization performed with beads.
Are there any special considerations to take into account when submitting a scientific abstract?
Every research well conducted is important and will help improving our speciality, even when you don’t succeed in demonstrating what you initially wanted. Choosing the right topic, the most related to the focus of the conference, will help you perform better.
Do you have any tips for physicians submitting an abstract for the first time?
Take your time, but try not to submit on the very last day. Try to be synthetic and clear. The submitting platform is extremely easy to use.
Will you submit another abstract for ET 2024?
I probably will. This year, I was thinking of submitting something more clinical, a case report from my clinical practice.
